Spreading Joy this Holiday Season

Posted by Karen Thompson on

December is always a busy time of year. People ask how you are, and the most common response is "busy". How can we stay positive and take our minds off the stresses? The holiday season is now upon us and today we reflect on ways to spread joy and love this holiday season.

It came to my mind recently that when people mention Alzheimer's and dementia and the holiday season they talk a lot about the stresses, the burden, and the negativities. Acknowledging stress and burden is important when caring for persons living with dementia, however, we must not always focus on these burdens, especially over the holiday season. Think about ways to engage and make the most out of this time of year with your loved one with dementia, and don't take the people in your life for granted.

One of the ways my family and I stay joyful is by laughing and sharing humorous moments. Laughter boosts our mood instantly! Tell a funny story, a joke, play charades, or act silly. Life is too short not to laugh!

Another way we like to stay positive during the holiday season is to maintain our traditions. Consistency is a great way to maintain comfort for persons living with dementia. It is also a great way to reflect over the years by having the same traditions and looking back at all of these special moments. Take photos, videos, and spend quality time together.

Another way our family and I take the time to stay positive over the holidays is to share what we are grateful for over the holiday season. This is an awesome activity that helps you reflect on all of the wonderful things, people, and events that have happened over the year!

Lastly, I encourage you to do an act of kindness over the holidays. Even something as simple as holding the door for a stranger or paying it forward by donating a gift or food to a local charity. Giving makes you feel good and knowing that you can help brighten someone else's day will definitely boost your mood.

How do you spread joy over the holidays? Let us know in the comments below!
