Write4Dementia


Write4Dementia—What is it?

Write4Dementia is a short story writing competition run by Marlena Books. As a publisher of books specifically designed for individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia, we are looking for creative submissions written by high school students. The winners of our contest will have the opportunity to have their short story published and through Marlena Books and contribute to enhancing the lives of those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Important Dates

    • Contest begins →  Sept 23, 2019 8:00am EST
    • Contest ends→ October 13th, 2019 at 11:59pm EST
    • Contest winners announced → Nov 1st, 2019 at 11:59pm EST
    • Contest Winner(s) Book published → Mid-December 

Who can Submit

    • The contest will be divided into two age ranges; high school students from grades 9-10 and grades 11-12
    • Though we are mainly targeting Ontario schools, individual applicants within Canada are welcome to submit to our contest as well

What to Submit

    • Stories must be original, fictional short stories and may not exceed 1000 words 
    • Students SHOULD follow our accessible writing criteria and demonstrate ability to write for a different audience—see accessible writing and judging criteria for further information
    • There are no restrictions on the theme or genre of the story, HOWEVER teacher’s from partnering schools may choose to create a theme requirement for their students
    • Stories must be typed and double spaced

How to Submit

Individual Applicants:
          • Ensure that you have read and understood the "What to Submit" section, the W4D consent form, and Official Contest Rules
          • Please submit a Word document with the title: lastname_firstname_school_W4D.docx
          • We will only accept one submission per contestant (if you submit more than one story, we will only look at the final document you uploaded)
Partnered Schools
          • If your school has partnered with Marlena Books for Write4Dementia, please refer to the documents we have provided (Resources for Teachers) in order to complete student submissions
          • If your school would like to partner with Marlena Books for Write4Dementia, please send an email to info@marlenabooks.com with the subject "W4D Partnership: School Name"

    Contest Winners & Next Steps

      • All contest winners will receive a plaque as a sign of appreciation from the Marlena Books team
      • All contest winners will have the opportunity to have their stories published by Marlena Books and available for individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia in a physical or digital form 
      • Marlena Books will contact contest winners who have consented to have their works published to provide further details on the publishing process (Editing, producing artwork, printing, etc)
      • Contest winners will receive a hard copy of their published book :)
